The petitioner’s agent, Charles Hoffman, said the request seeks relief from the town’s size and height limits for accessory structures. “We’re looking at for a variance beyond the 250 square foot piece of structure to be constructed outside of the home itself. Also, look for a 15 foot 15 foot height variance on that,” Hoffman said. Hoffman added the proposed cabana would sit beside an in-ground pool in a residential area and that the property backs to a less-developed area.
Board members opened a public hearing, received no public comment, and discussed the town’s standards for accessory-structure variances. The board found the application met the criteria and voted to approve the variance by a 3-0 tally.
The agent noted the requested height is one foot greater than the town’s typical 14-foot limit for sheds and accessory structures. The application materials describe a 16-by-20-foot cabana; the owner named in the application is John Paul Schelling. The board’s approval allows the construction as described in the application packet; any building permit or inspections required by the town’s permitting process remain prerequisites to construction.
