Board receives ASBSD gold recognition; superintendent reports on athletics committee and crisis training

The Huron Board of Education accepted a gold‑level board recognition from the ASBSD at the Oct. 14 meeting and heard several informational reports from the superintendent about athletics and safety training.

Superintendent Dr. Steinhoff read a letter dated Oct. 7 informing the board that the district had earned a gold level award in the ASBSD school board recognition program for the 2024–25 school year. He said the plaque recognizes board participation in development, training and leadership activities during the prior school year and that the board would take a photograph to send to the ASBSD.

Dr. Steinhoff also told the board he had been asked to serve on a committee convened by the South Dakota High School Activities Association to review the state dual wrestling format. He said the committee will examine whether continued interest supports holding the state duals, potential changes to qualification or event format, and whether to implement a state girls dual event. He said he would reach out for input as the committee proceeds.

Finally, Dr. Steinhoff reported that the full administrative team received training from Brett Garland, director of the South Dakota State School Safety Program, on the I Love You Guys Foundation programs for crisis response and post‑crisis reunification. He said the district plans to extend that training to all staff in the future and noted the foundation was created after a 2006 school shooting; Dr. Steinhoff quoted the foundation's phrase, "crisis isn't a choice, response is," and recounted the origin of the foundation's name as explained in the training.
