Students explained the audition includes three scales (contestants memorize three and play one), two etudes that test technical skill, and a longer repertoire selection; they also take a terms test of roughly 50 questions drawn from about 130 musical terms. Students said audition timing is roughly eight minutes, with about one minute for the scale, 1.5 minutes for the etude and four minutes for the concert piece.
Caden Steinhoff, Alexander Martin Lopez and Harley Knippling (students identified in the meeting) said they receive audition materials in May, devote part of their summer to practice, and take weekly lessons run by local instructors. The students described workshops and rehearsals with visiting clinicians and with other area schools; they said the All‑State concert is scheduled for Nov. 1 and that students rehearse intensively the day before and the morning of the concert.
Students listed this year's audition participants by instrument family, noting a growth in audition numbers compared with the previous year.
