School board approves 2025–27 EMJ contract; two members abstain

The Jordan Public School District Board of Education approved the 2025–27 EMJ agreement at its regular meeting, Superintendent Evenson told the board. The contract was ratified by the bargaining unit and presented to the board for final approval, which carried on a roll-call vote.
Superintendent Evenson summarized the agreement during the board meeting: “We did 1.75 on year 1 and 1.75 on year 2 plus their steps. We had a $2,000 insurance contribution, and then had some language updates.” He also said the district arrived at a total package of about 6.17 percent.
Board members praised the negotiating process. The board held five meetings with the bargaining team; Evenson said the group settled the contract in four substantive sessions after an introductory meeting on norms and procedures.
At the roll call the votes were: Molly Maniac — yes; Lauren Pederson — yes; Corinne Hennen — yes; Jenny Kusky — abstain; Christina Olsen — abstain; Matt Bertrand — yes; Deb Polly — yes. Chair Deb Polly explained the abstentions were required because the two members have significant others who are included in the contract, and therefore could not legally vote. The motion carried.
The board discussion included an item-specific note that early learning services staff will move from an hourly salary schedule to an annual salary schedule, a topic the superintendent said had been discussed in multiple negotiations. The superintendent and board members said some salary lines are funded in part by other district budgets so positions may be paid from multiple budget sources.
The board did not provide a mover/second on the public transcript; the approval was recorded by roll-call vote. The board did not include detailed line-item language in the meeting presentation; the superintendent said additional contract language cleanups and clarifications were included in the ratified agreement.
The board approved the contract during the meeting; follow-up work will be payroll and budget implementation consistent with the district’s fiscal plans.
