City highlights cemetery headstone repairs and recent sealcoating work

Director of Parks and Recreation Chip Horner updated the council on the city’s multi‑phase cemetery restoration project on Oct. 6, describing work to lift, re‑foundation and reset aging monuments and recent pavement work inside the cemetery.
Horner said an earlier inventory counted almost 15,000 monuments and that crews have completed work on a little over 300 of them so far. He described the work as often requiring new foundations and, in some cases, cranes to lift taller monuments. Horner said the project aims both to restore markers and to reduce obstructions that complicate routine grounds maintenance.
Horner also reported that cemetery roads were sealcoated and some paving work was completed in the previous week. He noted the last time those roads were paved was February 2012 and that the recent work is intended to extend pavement life so the city can defer larger repaving costs in the near term. Horner said additional phases of cemetery work are budgeted for the next year and that staff will return for the Board of Works procurement process and quotes.
Council members and the mayor praised the work. Horner credited a city staff member, Les, for sharing photos of completed work.
