Cottonwood Extension District outlines health, childcare and workforce programs

Monique Kerner, Family Community Wellness Agent, summarized recent and upcoming programming: a Stay Strong Stay Healthy level 2 class, a Walk With Ease course starting in November, nutrition workshops, babysitting clinics (planned twice yearly) and hypertension-related programming that awards free blood-pressure monitors to participants. Kerner said the district partners with Ellis County EMS for CPR and first-aid certification during babysitting clinics and expects to run the program again in January.
Carissa Frazier, the district’s community health worker, described outreach to rural and agricultural communities and said she is starting Medicare Part D counseling that begins the next day. Frazier said she works with a dementia-respite program locally and will help deliver KDHE-certified hypertension monitoring, nutrition workshops and a worksite wellness program for employers in 2026. “I’m grant funded and my role is to reach rural Kansas and the agriculture workforce,” Frazier said.
Both staff described partner organizations, volunteer involvement and plans to continue programming with schools, libraries and community partners. No county action was requested; the item was informational.
