Board recommends $7.3 million from disaster relief account to protect WIC amid federal shutdown concerns

The State Board of Examiners recommended to the interim finance committee an allocation of $7,300,000 from the disaster relief account to cover costs associated with the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC), board staff said on Oct. 14, 2025.

The Office of Emergency Management presented the request under NRS 353.275(5). Board members voiced support for a workaround intended to protect WIC benefits during a potential federal shutdown; Governor Lombardo said he was grateful to see the measure placed to protect the program. A motion to approve the recommendation was moved and passed by voice vote.

Board staff identified the request as coming from the Office of Emergency Management and read the allocation amount into the record. No additional budgetary breakdown or timeline for expenditure was read into the public record during the meeting.

The recommendation will be forwarded to the interim finance committee for final action.
