South End residents ask Hartford to convert small Bond (Barn) Street park into housing lot

Hyacinth Yenny, representing the Maple Avenue Revitalization Group, asked the Hartford City Council during public comment to remove a small city park on Barn Street from park designation and convert it to a housing lot.
"It's a constant problem. We are driving out those homeowners from that area of the city to other places because the fact is it's become a drug and prostitution area," Yenny said, referring to the parcel she called "Bond Park" on Barn Street between Franklin and Maple.
Yenny said public works and the Hartford Police Department repeatedly clean the lot but the activity continues, and she asked the council to support removing the park designation so the parcel could be sold and redeveloped for housing. She said she had discussed the matter with a staff member named Kelly, who will look into it, and that a local buyer expressed interest.
Council President Shirley Surgeon asked for the street name and confirmed the location; Yenny provided the Barn Street/Franklin-to-Maple description. The council did not take formal action during the meeting; the comment was made during the public-comment period.
Yenny also thanked the council for support of the South End Wellness Senior Center and noted the center has more than 400 members.
