Staff said principal participation in the Indiana Principal Leadership Institute (IPLI) is required for certain principals and appears in the PD packet as required. Staff also said the state moved to a new IEP platform for special education this school year, and the PD requests include training to support staff in writing quality IEPs under the new system.
Trustee Joel Rodriguez and others asked for clarifications: whether listed travel costs (airfare, lodging, mileage) are included in the total line-item cost and whether total amounts shown are per person or aggregated for multiple attendees. Staff responded that totals are aggregated for all attendees listed in a single line item and that travel and lodging were intended to be included in the total cost column.
Trustee Jesse Gomez asked about two out-of-state conferences listed for multilingual instruction (the Multilingual Illinois Statewide Conference and NAB/NAfME-style national conferences) and how their content applies to district multilingual learners; staff explained the Illinois conference provides strategies applicable to multilingual students even though it is held outside Indiana, and the national conference is similar professional development intended to build capacity among leaders and teachers.
Trustees requested a follow-up with the number of bilingual/Spanish-speaking students at Lincoln (a specific building referenced during the discussion) so the board can weigh the PD benefit. Trustees also asked staff to update PD forms to match internal policy windows for submission (the packet indicated a 30-day submission while board policy references a three-month window).
No vote on the PD packet was recorded at the work session; trustees asked staff to return with clarified cost breakdowns, attendee counts and updated forms for the next meeting.
