Board adopts revised norms, suspends rule to vote same night on action items

The Tecumseh Public Schools Board of Education voted Sept. 22 to adopt revised board norms and to suspend the board’s usual rule requiring discussion one meeting and action the next, allowing several items to be voted the same night.
The norms, presented by Vice President Davis and discussed by trustees, add language committing board members to treat one another, district staff and families with “dignity and respect,” to engage authentically, and to seek to understand topics using relevant data before voting. The norms also reaffirmed that the board president is the official voice of the board and maintained a practice that, once the board votes, members speak with one voice.
Separately, a trustee moved to suspend the rule that normally delays action until a subsequent meeting so the board could vote on items discussed that night. The motion to suspend was seconded, and the board approved the suspension by roll call. After suspending the rule, the board took immediate action on the state aid resolution, the TLC donation and the pool testing item.
Trustees said the norms would be posted to the district website if approved. The board approved the revised norms by roll call vote with all trustees voting aye.
