At the Oct. 7 commission meeting the police chief reported that body-camera footage reviewed in recent citizen complaints showed no officer wrongdoing and in at least one case the department referred the complainant for potential prosecution for making a false report.
The chief said body cameras have been a tool for accountability and asserted that since the department began using them, each officer complaint reviewed with camera footage has resulted in the officer being exonerated. The chief described having substantive conversations with the citizens who filed the complaints after reviewing footage and emphasized the administrative value of body-camera recordings in resolving disputed accounts.
Separately, the chief announced the department’s eighth annual toy drive. The department partnered with local groups last year to serve more than 100 families; the chief said he will provide dates and partner names at the next meeting and asked commissioners to consider attending the wrapping party and donation events. Staff will begin collecting toys in advance of the event.
