Summary
Police Chief reported 8,518 calls for service in the quarter, highlighted drug-related arrests as the top arrest category, and said the department will revive CompStat and pursue a multi‑jurisdictional narcotics task force.
Durant's police chief told the City Council the department responded to 8,518 calls for service over the most recent three-month period and outlined enforcement and community engagement priorities, including drug investigations and traffic safety work.
Chief Petty reported the department investigated 259 motor vehicle collisions during the period and said peak collisions occur between 3 p.m. and 5 p.m. and most frequently on Fridays, followed by Tuesdays and Thursdays. He said the top arrest categories were drug‑related offenses, public intoxication and other unclassified offenses; overall the department made 678 arrests during the quarter.
On violent crime and investigative response, the chief said detectives cleared three major index crimes quickly and that the criminal investigations division (CID) currently carries about 78 general investigations. "Within 24, 48, and 72 hours on those, they were making arrests, identifying suspects, and taking people off streets that were suspected of those crimes," he said.
Responding to council questions about an increase in violent incidents and narcotics activity, the chief said the department is reviving CompStat, a data-driven accountability and deployment tool, and is pursuing a joint task force and enhanced information sharing with neighboring jurisdictions and federal partners. "We are resurrecting CompStat... so that we can start patrolling with purpose and make sure we're putting resources where they need to be," he said. He added discussions are underway with the county sheriff about forming a task force.
The chief also described community outreach efforts including a first annual National Night Out event, training programs, and plans to expand a K‑9 assignment to narcotics work and leverage ATF and federal task force resources.
Ending: Council members requested additional statistics (e.g., drug seizure data and overdose call counts) and asked staff to provide those figures at a future meeting. No formal council action or ordinance changes were made in this session.
