The Alabama State Board of Education adopted multiple resolutions recognizing student achievement in the arts and designated March 2021 as Arts Education Month in Alabama schools.
The board adopted a resolution commending Alice Keller of Guntersville Middle School for winning Elementary Best of Show in the 2021 State Superintendent's Visual Arts Exhibit. Dr. Cynthia McCarty read the resolution and the board voted unanimously to adopt it. The resolution named Keller’s teacher, Valerie Jones, her principal, Dr. Von Enloe, and her superintendent, Rick Ayer.
The board then adopted a resolution recognizing Summer Burris of Enterprise High School for winning Secondary Best of Show in the 2021 State Superintendent's Visual Arts Exhibit. Tracy West read the resolution; the board invited Burris, her teacher Amber Henson, principal Stan Sauls and her superintendent Gregory S. Faught to the front of the room. Burris addressed the board and said her AP portfolio explores “the pressures to be perfect and their effects on people,” noting she used a black-and-white palette with a bright yellow tape measure as the focal point to symbolize constriction and pressure.
Following the student recognitions, the board unanimously adopted a resolution designating March 2021 as Arts Education Month in Alabama.
Board members and the superintendent praised arts educators and the role of visual and performing arts for students, particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic. The board did not attach funding or new program directives to the designation in the recorded motions.
