Columbus City Council on Aug. 19 adopted on first reading an ordinance to create a deputy controller position in the Columbus municipal code, enabling the city fiscal officer to appoint and delegate duties to a deputy controller under state statute.
Regina McIntyre introduced the ordinance, explaining the council previously voted in May to convert an accounting specialist role to a deputy controller but the city must enact an ordinance to establish the position in municipal code before the fiscal officer can legally delegate statutory duties. McIntyre said hiring and salary provisions were addressed in the current salary ordinance and that the formal municipal‑code language was being brought forward to enable delegation.
Council approved first reading by roll call, 8–0. City staff said the ordinance will be discussed again at the next meeting for subsequent readings as required by city procedure.
