On Aug. 19 the Columbus City Council approved on second reading a planning department–initiated ordinance to rezone a collection of properties near Seventeenth Street and College to better reflect their long‑standing residential use.
Planning staff explained the rezoning corrects a historical mismatch: several parcels in the area remained zoned I‑2 or commercial from mid‑20th‑century mapping even though they have been residential since their development in the late 19th and 20th centuries. The proposal rezones properties north of Seventeenth to RS‑4 (single‑family) and properties south of Seventeenth to RE (residential established) to match neighboring patterns.
Staff said they mailed two rounds of notifications to affected property owners (a request for input and an invitation to the plan commission hearing) and received no substantive objections. The plan commission issued a unanimous favorable recommendation. During the council’s public comment period Stephanie Carm (address given) asked a clarifying question about a nearby building that remains commercially zoned; staff clarified the rezoning boundary follows an alley and does not change that specific building’s zoning.
The council moved to pass the ordinance on second reading; the motion and second were recorded, and the second reading passed by roll call vote 8–0.
