Public safety committee members reported the item had come to committee with a unanimous positive recommendation. The grant is structured as a 90/10 award, with the federal portion covering 90% of eligible costs and the city (or participating local agencies) responsible for a 10% match. Fire department staff said the funding will support in-house training and reduce the need to send personnel to out-of-town training that carries higher per-person costs. Chief representatives said the grant will be executed over a multi-year schedule once federal authorities complete administrative steps.
The board discussed urgency related to a federal shutdown that had temporarily blocked acceptance and noted the application notification arrived Sept. 25; staff asked the board to waive the usual two-week rule for considering the grant because of a hard acceptance deadline. The motion to accept the grant was made by Alderman Goodwin and seconded by Alderman Garton; the measure passed unanimously.
