Troy Junior High students present mental health, food drive and spirit initiatives to board
Summary
Four Troy Junior High Student Council members described recent and planned activities, including a mental wellness day, a Thanksgiving food drive, staff appreciation efforts and school spirit events.
Four members of the Troy Junior High Student Council presented to the Troy City School District Board about recent activities and upcoming initiatives.
Students who introduced themselves said they are eighth‑graders and described a mental wellness day that offered activities such as painting with inspirational quotes and other options so students could find a comfortable way to participate. They also described a Thanksgiving basket program that collects food for families in need, staff appreciation efforts including candy grams and end‑of‑year customized gifts, and school spirit activities such as spirit weeks, door‑decorating contests, reward‑day options and a pie‑in‑the‑face fundraiser where students buy tickets to pie teachers for 25 cents each.
Students said participation in Student Council (StuCo) helped develop leadership and organization skills and that selection to StuCo this year used an application, review of grades and attendance, and peer voting, which the students said was intended to reduce popularity contests. The students noted that StuCo this year includes 31 members and that staff advisors Alex Segretto (identified in the presentation) and Ms. Segretto support their work.
Board members praised the students for their work on mental health activities and other events and asked a few clarifying questions about selection and program details. The board invited the students and their guests to remain for the rest of the meeting.
