Kaufman County commissioners on Oct. 14 unanimously approved a proclamation designating October 2025 as Domestic Violence Awareness Month and invited local service providers to summarize needs and upcoming fundraising events.
The county’s district attorney (identified in the meeting as Miss Early) presented the proclamation, which noted the prevalence of intimate‑partner violence in Texas and urged residents to increase awareness of warning signs and the resources available for safety and support. Amanda Lewis, identified herself as with Genesys/Genesis Center North Texas, spoke on behalf of the shelter and thanked the court for county support; another speaker representing a local residential program described serving 10 women and 15 children and said the organization operates both an emergency short-term unit and a residential program of up to 12 months.
Commissioner Moore moved approval of the proclamation; Commissioner Crowe seconded. The court adopted the proclamation by voice vote. Speakers encouraged the court and public to attend upcoming events and fundraisers, including a gala scheduled Feb. 21, 2026 (mentioned by a shelter representative), and noted donations and the shelter thrift store help support services.
Speakers described the shelter services available: emergency short-term shelter (30–45 days), residential programs that include counseling, financial management, substance‑use support and other classes, and volunteer and community partnerships that support operations. Presenters asked the court and community to continue budgetary and community support; no specific county funding action was announced during the meeting.
The DA’s office, shelter representatives and county staff appeared together during the proclamation presentation; the court signed the proclamation as requested.
No roll-call vote was recorded; the proclamation was adopted by voice vote after the motion.
