School board sets public hearing on policy updates tied to recent state law changes

The Pinellas County School Board voted 7-0 on Oct. 14 to set a public hearing and authorize advertisement for proposed amendments to three district policies that staff said are being updated to reflect recent state-law changes.
Leanna Ison, director of strategic planning and policy, told the board the revisions are aligned with this year’s state legislation and State Board of Education rule changes. The three policies are: 2423.01 (career and professional education), updated to reflect House Bill 1145; 5500.07 (code of student conduct/discipline), revised to align with House Bill 1105’s restrictions on wireless communication devices in elementary and middle schools; and 8405 (school safety), amended in response to Senate Bill 1470 to add a requirement for after‑action reports following emergency drills.
Ison said the proposed changes remove language that restated statute and streamline the board policy language; she told the board the items return for a second reading in December.
Board members noted the policy workshop where the amendments were discussed. The board voted to approve the first reading and authorize public-notice steps. The district will publish the required hearing notices and bring the items back for a second reading at the December meeting.
