Council recognizes community volunteers, issues proclamations and highlights veterans events and fall activities

The Lawton City Council used part of its Oct. 15 meeting to recognize community volunteers and issue several proclamations while staff and local organizers previewed upcoming community events.
Awards and proclamations: City Manager John Ratliff and staff presented Andrea Morgan, deputy administrator for Arts and Humanities, with a recognition for her role in the city’s recent birthday celebration and the Freedom Festival. The council also proclaimed the Deja Vu Social and Civic Club as the city’s Citizens of the Month for October, noting the group’s fundraising for school supplies, cancer centers and holiday assistance programs. Council also proclaimed October 2025 as Breast Cancer Awareness Month; local survivors and the Mayor’s Commission on the Status of Women urged early detection and community support.
White Cane Safety Day: The council proclaimed Oct. 15, 2025, as White Cane Safety Day to raise public awareness of legal protections and safe driving guidance for people who are blind or visually impaired. Tom Love, speaking for the Lawton Council of the Blind, urged drivers to be mindful of white-cane users, especially during busy shopping times.
Community events: Jocelyn Wood reported there are more than 100 registered participants or businesses for Park-O-Treat (Elmer Thomas Park, Oct. 18, 2–5 p.m.), up from roughly 38 last year, and previewed logistics including a helicopter appearance if conditions permit. Wood also described the Steps Under Stars & Stripes 24-hour veteran-flag relay at the VA Medical Center set for Nov. 7–8. She asked businesses and public figures to sign up for hourly flag-carry shifts; organizers noted food donations from local businesses and a conclusion ceremony at 1:30 p.m. on Nov. 8.
Staffing note: The council introduced Chandra Young as the city’s new finance director. Young, a Texas Tech University graduate with public-accounting and government experience, spoke briefly and said she looked forward to working with the city.
