Superintendent reports test-score gains, rising chronic absenteeism and discipline referrals

The superintendent reported academic progress for the district at the George County School District board meeting on Aug. 30, saying diagnostic and projection measures show gains while student absenteeism and disciplinary incidents remain concerns.

In the presentation, the superintendent said diagnostic results included about 24.95 proficiency points in English and about 51.1 proficiency points in math; projected growth figures cited included 33 points for reading growth and a projected 2–4 points growth in math for all students. The superintendent said early English language arts projections after the first nine weeks showed lower scores on an initial check but improved in subsequent projections.

The superintendent reported total district enrollment at approximately 577 students and a chronic absentee rate of 24.78 percent. Teacher attendance was reported at about 96.1 percent. The number of discipline referrals was given as 43 at one reporting point and climbed to about 60 by the end of the week, with many incidents described as horseplay or repeated general infractions.

The superintendent said the district has made “significant strides” correcting issues from the previous year and pointed the board to the monthly board report for full diagnostics and projections. The report included subgroup projections for the bottom quartile and subject-area proficiency checks.

The presentation included a brief exchange about classroom technology and assessment platforms and noted district staff are monitoring progress checks and projected proficiency data.

Board members did not take a separate formal vote on the superintendent’s report during the discussion recorded in the transcript.

The district will continue to monitor attendance and disciplinary trends and report updates in future board meetings.
