The Fort Scott City Commission voted Sept. 3 to approve a memorandum of understanding with the Chamber Foundation to operate a seasonal downtown ice-skating rink during the holiday period.
Diane Stryler presented an updated MOU that designates the Chamber Foundation as the partner responsible for operations, staffing and teardown. The plan calls for a soft opening the week of Thanksgiving, a full schedule around the Christmas weekend and operation for five holiday weekends through early January. The city would allow rink organizers to use pavilion space and city electricity and lighting; funding was expected to come from donations and private contributions.
Commissioners asked about insurance, waivers, user safety and whether patrons must provide skates. Stryler said estimated insurance costs were $1,500 to $2,000 annually; the chamber identified waivers and donor funding, and said it would oversee staffing and teardown (some contracting out expected). Commissioners discussed liability exposure and compared the rink to existing city amenities such as the pool and splash pad.
A motion to approve the MOU passed on roll call. Staff and the chamber will finalize operational details, signage and insurance before the event.
