Board removes 'commissioner's corner' from newsletter after heated debate over Oracle messaging

Vice President Malloy called for removal, and Commissioner Patterson moved the motion; Commissioner Griffin seconded. The motion passed by voice vote after an extended public exchange among commissioners about transparency and the proper forum for commentary on ongoing operational matters.
Supporters of the removal said the newsletter must stay focused on the board's stated goal of student-outcomes-focused governance and should avoid content that presents contested or evolving operational claims as settled fact. Legal counsel Neil told the board there are potential problems with publishing statements presented as fact about a complicated, ongoing matter; he encouraged standards or board voting for any board-originated messaging. Several commissioners and other speakers acknowledged staff and administration have been working to address Oracle-related impacts.
Opponents of the removal argued the action curtailed transparency, citing thousands of district employees and families still affected by the Oracle transition. Commissioner Santiago explicitly said she opposed the motion and regarded the removal as a step away from transparency, criticizing the board majority for silencing discussion of the Oracle impacts. Another commissioner said he regularly seeks out staff and employees to understand impacts and urged constructive engagement.
Board leadership and staff said the October newsletter may still be issued without the commissioner's corner and that the newsletter SOP will be revisited and re-drafted for clearer guidance. Administration confirmed the board clerk will circulate the current edition without a commissioner's corner and that the SOP and newsletter content will be discussed further at a future meeting.
