During the meeting the Connecticut Ireland Trade Commission moved from presentation to organizational business, establishing subcommittees and a task force and identifying volunteers to lead outreach and data collection.
The commission grouped its work into three subcommittees — trade; education; and arts, culture, heritage and tourism — and created a task force to compile a contact database of businesses, cultural centers and clubs. The chair listed members who volunteered on the record: Colin O’Neil (trade subcommittee chair); Greg Butler (trade); Tom O’Day (trade); Representative Steven Meskers (trade); Joan Hartley (trade); Mariah Moriarty (tourism/arts); Martin Dunleavy (task force); Patty LaShane/LeChane (arts/culture/task force); Emmett Riley (task force, although absent from the meeting); Loreto (task force); and others who were added during the roll call. Committee staff said subcommittees will meet weekly or biweekly between full commission meetings to update the planned website and contact portal.
Several members urged a more proactive commercial push to attract Irish firms. A commissioner who works with an innovation co‑working location in New London reported that exploratory discussions with Irish companies “have essentially stopped” over the past two years and recommended a delegation to Ireland and higher‑level outreach, including possible gubernatorial involvement to promote Connecticut as a headquarters location between Boston and New York. Representative Meskers and other commissioners said the commerce committee and state economic-development arm (AdvanceCT/Department of Economic and Community Development) could help vet and pitch opportunities to interested Irish firms; one commissioner noted an Irish business owner is scheduled to visit Stamford to evaluate a site for an AI environmental‑controls company.
Members also announced events and fundraising plans: Colin O’Neil promoted a public discussion on Irish unity on Oct. 25 in Glastonbury featuring Marie Farrell, a Teachta Dála (TD) from Galway; Martin Dunleavy said the Connecticut committee is coordinating another fundraiser for the Irish American Partnership (to raise technology for underserved schools in Ireland) expected in April or May; and Chairpersons encouraged members to forward event information to the commission clerk for distribution.
On scheduling, the commission discussed meeting dates and settled on Tuesday, Nov. 18 at 4:00 p.m. for the next full meeting, after checking calendar conflicts. The meeting ended with a motion to adjourn.
