Committee adopts SMART goals, schedules neighborhood safety work and raises event budgets

The Traffic and Public Safety Committee reviewed its SMART goals and work plan for the July 1 start of the committee year and adjusted budget items to support events and community training.
Staff presented the committee’s goal list and asked members to set target dates and priorities. The committee set an initial schedule for neighborhood‑watch trainings beginning in July and agreed to target crosswalk and school‑safety activities when school resumes in September. Members discussed mock evacuation drills for neighborhoods and tentatively scheduled neighborhood evacuation‑planning exercises in August, October, January, March and May (to be refined).
Committee members also discussed classes the committee has supported in prior years — CPR, first aid, AED training and self‑defense — and agreed to pursue those trainings again, with staff noting prior sessions and that certifications typically last two years.
On budget items, the committee voted to amend its current aid package: increase the neighborhood watch events line from $1,500 to $3,000 to include a slow‑traffic yard‑sign campaign; increase National Night Out to $2,000 for larger programming and supplies; remove a $1,000 line for police reports (staff said the city will no longer pay for those reports); and keep the previously agreed increased allocation for city‑sponsored classes. Committee members said they will present the amended budget lines to the city council for inclusion in the next packet.
A motion to approve the revised 02/2026 Traffic & Public Safety Committee budget passed unanimously. Staff said it will send a PDF of the updated work plan and the budget changes to members before the next meeting.
