Romulus council approves distribution of draft master plan future land use map for 42‑day review

Romulus City Council on Oct. 13 voted to distribute the preliminary draft of the city's master plan future land use map to adjacent municipalities, county agencies and utilities for the 42‑day review required by the Michigan Planning Enabling Act (MCL 125.3841).

Jeff Kemp summarized the process and said the planning commission recommended the draft. Carlisle Ortman planning consultant John Tenno told council the distribution is the statutory next step: “What's being requested of council this evening is simply, approval to, distribute the master plan to our neighbors, utilities, and the county,” Tenno said. The 42‑day review will give neighboring communities a chance to comment.

Tenno noted the draft includes clarifications (for example, distinguishing schools from recreation/open-space uses on the map) and that the planning commission will hold a public hearing after the review period. Councilmember Abdo asked whether the draft shows any expansion of the TIFA district; staff replied that the TIFA plan update would be a separate process and that the master plan draft did not propose a TIFA expansion.

Miss Roscoe moved to concur with the planning commission and approve distribution; Mr. Jones supported the motion. Council approved the distribution by roll-call vote. Next steps: staff will send the draft to neighboring jurisdictions for 42 days, collect responses, and the planning commission will then hold a public hearing before returning a final plan to council for adoption.
