Operations committee advances school repairs, playground additions and commissioning services

The Coatesville Area School District operations committee on Oct. 14 recommended a series of facilities and maintenance actions to the full board, including bidding and contract approvals for boiler repairs, playground improvements, rock edging, commissioning services and audiovisual system repairs.
The committee recommended approval of a proposal from PVBJ Inc. for senior-high boiler repair or replacement and an amendment to the Siemens Industry performance-contracting agreement to align scope with final construction conditions as the projects near closeout. The Siemens amendment was described as a final-scope modification to reflect actual construction needs.
Site-specific work advanced to the full board included a BSS Contractors LLC proposal to place 1–3-inch river rock along about 120–130 feet of fence line at Scott Middle School for $5,360.79 to control weeds and improve maintenance access. The committee also recommended a change order for Lobar Inc. to add playground line striping at Reesville Elementary for an additional $7,665, bringing the Reesville addition project total to $3,172,242.53; committee members said the striping will add hopscotch, 4-square, basketball court markings and other play-area graphics.
For the Doe Run Elementary School project, the committee recommended awarding a lump-sum contract of $49,850 to the Stone House Group to provide commissioning services. Committee members defined commissioning as a quality-assurance process that verifies HVAC, electrical and plumbing systems are installed, tested and operating according to design and manufacturer specifications and noted commissioning includes energy-efficiency and longevity checks.
Telecom and audio work advanced included a clock system at Scott Middle School for $3,475 (Telecom Systems, Inc.), an intercom/PA restoration at Caln (sic) for $2,850, and PA-system repairs at North Brandywine and Rainbow Elementary not to exceed $15,000. Committee members said the “not to exceed” cap is used because some repairs require on-site assessment before final scope and cost are known and staff want authorization to proceed without an additional month’s delay.
The committee’s recommendations will be presented for full board approval at the district’s next board meeting.
