The Beaverton School Board voted 6–1 on Oct. 14 to approve a public contract authorization to install a baseball/softball turf at Beaverton High School.
After the consent agenda was called and the turf item was pulled by a board member for discussion, the board later moved the contract authorization and held a vote. Doctor Carpenter registered the lone dissent, citing concerns about orthopedic injuries on artificial turf, microplastics inhalation and runoff. “Orthopedic injuries are high under fields,” Carpenter said, and she asked the record to reflect her continuing concerns even as she allowed the motion to proceed.
District staff and other board members said they had reviewed safety questions and that they were not aware of injuries specifically attributable to turf use in the district. There was no board statement at the Oct. 14 meeting that the district had documented a turf-specific injury pattern.
The motion passed with six votes in favor and one opposed; the transcript records the vote tally and that Doctor Carpenter was the dissenting vote. The board did not provide additional detail at the meeting about contractor identity, contract value or schedule; staff indicated those details are available in the public contract authorization paperwork in the board packet.
Board members and the superintendent acknowledged the concerns raised and said the district would continue to monitor safety issues and vendor documentation related to materials and maintenance.
Action recorded: public-contract authorization for Beaverton High School baseball/softball turf approved, 6 yes, 1 no.
