Resident warns of library-hour reductions and urges county support after failed ballot measure

A library advocate told the Washoe County Board of County Commissioners on Oct. 14 that local library services are at risk following the 2024 defeat of a property-tax measure that had funded portions of the system.
Public commenter Susan Walls said the Washoe County Library Board faces capacity and training problems and that some locations already have reduced hours or are closed for days. Walls said the board appears uncertain about how to budget without the passed measure and urged county staff and commissioners to provide clear guidance and to preserve prior service and hours where possible.
County staff confirmed the library board will prepare budget recommendations and that the commission will consider the library budget as part of the upcoming fiscal process. Commissioners indicated the library board’s next formal item and the county budget cycle will determine staffing and hours going forward.
Walls urged the county to restore previous service levels and recommended volunteers and partnerships as short-term help while the board and staff finalize budget plans. Commissioners requested staff follow up and suggested a future agenda item to review the library’s budget and service impacts.
