BROWNSBURG, Ind. — Reserve Officer Kim Karashchenko submitted a formal resignation at the Oct. 14 meeting of the Brownsburg Police Commission, and the commission approved both the resignation and a request to declare a service weapon surplus and transfer it to the retiree.
Karashchenko’s letter, read aloud by Commissioner Cooper, said she is transitioning to a paid part-time position with the Danville Metropolitan Police Department after nearly 16 years of unpaid reserve service. In the letter she cited an opportunity to be reimbursed for time she previously volunteered.
Chief Joseph Grimes presented a separate letter asking the commission to remove from active inventory a Glock model G27, serial number XRG387, and to transfer ownership, registration and the weapon to Karashchenko effective Oct. 23. Grimes’s letter referenced Indiana statutes IC 7.1-2-2-11.5 and IC 21-17-5-6.
The commission voted on the resignation and on the surplus/transfer of the service weapon; both motions were recorded as carried in the meeting minutes.
Grimes thanked Karashchenko for her volunteer service and said the department will invite her to a gathering to present a final parting gift after the town council completes any required signatures on the town-level paperwork.
Commission discussion: A commissioner asked about the reserve division’s overall status and whether the department intends to replace reserve officers as attrition reduces ranks. Grimes said the department will reassess the reserve program with incoming leadership and noted that the state has discussed being more restrictive on reserve and special police officers.
Ending: The commission approved the resignation and the weapon-transfer request and moved on to other agenda items.
