The Planning, Economic Development and Community Services Committee interviewed and approved William "Ted" Reinhardt to fill Post 8 of the DeKalb County Public Library Board of Trustees.
Chair Nicole Messia introduced the appointment packet and asked Mr. Reinhardt to summarize his background. Reinhardt described more than two decades living in DeKalb and roughly 14 years working for DeKalb County government, including service as deputy COO, which gave him experience working with the library system.
The nut graf: Commissioners said Reinhardt’s familiarity with county operations and the library system would help the board weigh competing priorities such as facilities, staffing and materials in a period of tight resources.
During the interview, Reinhardt highlighted challenges for libraries in a digital era and said libraries must balance traditional services (book lending) with databases, homework help, tutoring and programming for both youth and an aging population. "Everything is more and more complicated," Reinhardt said, adding that libraries need staff supported to stay current on technology and community needs.
Commissioners Long Spears, Terry, Patrick and Bolton asked questions and offered support. Commissioner Long Spears asked how Reinhardt would ensure libraries remain welcoming and inclusive; Reinhardt stressed tailoring services to neighborhood needs and using GIS and other data to plan programs. Several commissioners praised his prior county experience and said they expected him to be an active trustee.
The committee voted to approve Reinhardt’s appointment by voice vote. Central staff said they will follow up with onboarding steps.
