At its Oct. 14 meeting the Clay County Board of County Commissioners adopted three proclamations and approved a letter of recognition for a local veteran.
Domestic violence awareness: The board read and adopted a proclamation recognizing October 2025 as Domestic Violence Awareness Month in Clay County. The proclamation recited local services by Quigley House, noting that in the last fiscal year the agency provided more than 9,400 shelter nights to 212 local adults and children, answered 1,331 crisis calls and supported survivors through injunction services and forensic exams. A Quigley House representative thanked the board and noted the organization’s work providing stable housing and services to survivors.
Village Improvement Association: The board commended the Village Improvement Association/Federated Women’s Club of Green Cove Springs for coordinating an international day of service focused on domestic violence, sexual assault and human trafficking. The group coordinated partners including the Clay County Sheriff’s Office and Quigley House; the association’s fundraising presented nearly $500 in gift cards to Quigley House to assist transportation needs for families seeking services.
World Polio Day: The board adopted a proclamation recognizing Oct. 24, 2025, as World Polio Day and commending Rotary International clubs in Clay County for vaccination and eradication efforts.
Letter of recognition: Commissioners unanimously approved a letter of recognition for Wilson Demarkey, a Clay County resident and U.S. Navy veteran who was a prisoner of war in Vietnam. County staff will present the letter to Demarkey’s family at a service scheduled for the coming weekend.
Each proclamation was adopted by voice vote during the meeting; the board also recorded brief remarks of appreciation from community representatives and law-enforcement and court-office staff who partner with local nonprofits.
