Powhatan County School Board members received an update on the division’s strategic plan, professional development programs for 2025–26, and several school‑level enrichment efforts.
Strategic plan and accountability Chief Academic Officer Dr. Angela Stewart reviewed progress on the division’s strategic plan (2023–2030), which centers on academic excellence, leveraging talent, family and community engagement, and student wellness. Dr. Stewart said the plan itself remains unchanged but that some key performance indicators (KPIs) will be adjusted to align with updated Virginia accreditation standards issued in July.
Key metrics provided in the presentation included a measured decline in chronic absenteeism rates at several schools, a reduction in dropout rates and a modest increase in graduation rate. "We are happy to say that all of our schools are either on track or distinguished according to the new accountability measures put in place," Dr. Stewart reported.
Professional development (PD) Dr. Stewart reviewed summer and ongoing PD offerings, including new teacher academy, specially designed instruction training, CPR/first aid, safety care, and an instructional coaching model that uses a train‑the‑trainer approach. The division plans regular workshops and an "Instruction Connection" monthly newsletter to share tips and resources with teachers.
Educational programs and grants - Wolf Trap residency: Director of Special Education Dr. Lynn Clayton Prince reported that Powhatan County was chosen for a Wolf Trap Foundation residency in early childhood classrooms. The program will serve 22 pre‑K through first‑grade teachers and is funded at no cost to the county; the program value shown in the presentation was approximately $27,000. - Geography teacher fellowship: Powhatan High School teacher Paula Duncan was recognized after being named a 2025–26 Geography Teacher Fellow by the American Geographical Society. The board congratulated her; the fellowship includes attendance at an AGS symposium and professional development. - Middle‑school literacy initiative: Palatine (Powhatan) Middle School principal Colin Innes and staff described a new literacy campaign that includes themed hallways, reading challenges, an expanded middle‑school book fair (more than $7,600 in sales reported) and monthly literacy themes to increase engagement.
Public comment and safety concerns Several public speakers and board members expressed urgent concern after the meeting opened with a moment of silence for a student who died by suicide the night before. Speakers and board members urged focus on student mental health and safer environments; multiple commenters and board members asked for increased supports and for staff to pursue programs that identify students in crisis.
