Local warming center requests utility assistance after staff loss

A representative for Touch of Life Ministries told the Coffeyville City Commission she is seeking a $1,000 credit toward the ministry's utility bill to support operations of a warming center.
Alicia Mountain, who identified herself as representing Touch of Life Ministries at 501 East Ninth, described expanded program activity this year including weekly recovery classes, financial education and summer feeding and back-to-school events. Mountain said she recently lost her husband, who had personally helped cover operating shortfalls, and that the ministry now needs assistance with utility costs.
"At this time, we are needing assistance with further funding for our electric or utilities at that building for the warming center," Mountain said, adding that the ministry will also accept instruction on paperwork if required. She asked for a $1,000 credit and offered to complete any forms the city requires.
City staff asked Mountain to meet outside the meeting to review options and potential programs. "I think in this particular situation, we'd probably best if you wanted to come in and meet with me. We can go over that," a staff member said, adding that other funding sources might be available once staff understands program details.
Commissioners thanked Mountain for her service and expressed support; the commission did not vote on the request during the meeting. Staff said they would follow up to identify available assistance and any application steps.
