Leasing corporation approves perpetual easement for SECO Energy to serve South Marion High School

The Marion County School Board Leasing Corporation on an expedited vote approved Resolution 25-13 authorizing a nonexclusive perpetual easement with Sumter Electric Cooperative, doing business as SECO Energy, to provide ingress and egress and to install, maintain, repair, relocate and replace above-ground or underground electric transmission and distribution facilities on school property.

Attorney Jeremy Powers, the school board attorney who serves as attorney for the leasing corporation, told the board the easement “will provide SECO Energy ingress and egress to place, construct, repair, maintain, relocate, and replace an electric transmission and or distribution line or system and all associated appurtenances in connection with the above ground or underground facilities.”

The document discussed by the board says the easement will benefit the new high school complex identified as South Marion High School. Powers told directors the easement “does not prohibit or materially interfere with the new high school … or the use of the school property as security for the financing described in the 2024 ground lease” and will be treated as a permitted encumbrance under that lease.

No members of the public signed up to speak on the item. Nancy Thrower made a motion to adopt Resolution 25-13; Dr. Lisonbee Campbell seconded. The board voted 4-0 in favor, with Dr. Lisonbee Campbell, Lori Conrad, Nancy Thrower and Dr. Sarah James recorded as voting yes. Eric Cummings was noted as not present earlier in the meeting and was not recorded on the vote.

The special meeting was called to order at 5:00 p.m. and adjourned at approximately 5:04 p.m. after the vote.
