The Denison Historic Preservation Board on Oct. 7 approved a certificate of appropriateness to install two doors at 106 South Houston Street, converting a broken front window into an iron-and-glass entry and adding a rear entry with a cedar surround. The changes create separate entrances for ground-floor warehouse space and the loft above and were described by staff as improving safety and fire-code best practice.
Staff reported the building dates to about 1885 with later additions through 1945; the streetscape has formed over time through infill. The application proposed an iron-and-glass front door with sidelights where a cracked window now exists, and a second single-entry door at the rear with a cedar surround. Staff recommended approval of both doors.
A board member moved to approve the certificate of appropriateness for the two doors at 106 South Houston Street and another board member seconded. The motion passed by voice vote.
Staff noted the changes were limited to the two exterior entry points presented and that separate interior renovations or other exterior changes would require additional review if they affect historic features.
