The Baldwin Park Stakeholders Oversight Committee voted Oct. 14 to allocate $35,000 to cover transportation costs for senior citizen trips and tours organized by the recreation community services division.
Staff said the seniors traditionally pay admission fees and the city covers transportation. The buses used for excursions are ADA-compliant and equipped with restrooms; staff said the city also provides a trailing vehicle to retrieve participants who are delayed. "The city will pick up the costs for transportation," a city staff presenter said.
Staff listed common destinations that the senior program visits, including Big Bear Lake, the San Diego Zoo Safari Park and the LA County Fair. The committee asked about resident and nonresident fees; staff said residents pay a lower fee and are given early registration priority, while nonresidents pay an additional $5–$10 fee and register later if space remains.
Members spoke in favor of the program as an important social and wellness resource for older residents. Member Hernandez, Member Martha Carcamo, Member Orozco, Member Nguyen, Vice Chair Jackson and Chair Lara voted yes; the motion carried.
Staff said the $35,000 request covers transportation only; other costs such as admissions and staff time are covered from other city funds. The committee did not set an expiration for the funding; staff said similar requests will be evaluated during the next budget cycle.
