Sheriff Dennis Weitzer reported to Grant County magistrates that the sheriff epartment responded to 765 calls for service in August and opened 42 criminal investigations.
Weitzer said deputies investigated seven collisions, issued 80 citations and made 62 arrests. The office served 154 civil summonses and completed 199 motor vehicle inspections; Weitzer noted one special-purpose off-road vehicle inspection among those.
The sheriff reported 92 miles of prisoner transports and 64 hours providing court security during the month. Weitzer said interviews were held to replace two deputies who left earlier in the year; one applicant has advanced to a second phase of hiring this month. He also said one deputy is pursuing an opportunity in Scott County and may leave.
Weitzer described a recent fundraising golf scramble that raised money for the office—harity program "Shop with a Cop." He also said the office continues to recruit for patrol and court-security positions.
Magistrates asked about court-security staffing; Weitzer responded that one hire started in the prior month and two additional hires are scheduled to begin the next few weeks pending completion of hiring steps.
