Jeff Schmidt, PGA operations manager at Phillips Park Golf Course, presented the golf course 27s 2025 initiatives and decision packages on Oct. 30, asking for new maintenance equipment, two maintenance positions, seasonal concession staff and expanded inventory funding to support revenue growth.
Schmidt said the course replaced older equipment in 2024 and plans additional capital purchases for 2025, including a new 9-foot deck reel mower, bunker groomer, a replacement for a 15-year-old range ball collection unit, a walk-behind aerator and a top-dresser. Several current units are 15 to 20 years old and frequently require repair, he said.
On staffing, Schmidt proposed two maintenance worker positions dedicated to the golf course (rather than borrowed from other divisions) and a seasonal concession worker to handle expanded food-and-beverage hours. He said those roles would let staff perform maintenance before golfers arrive and better support food service.
Schmidt said Phillips Park 27s gross annual revenue range is about $2.3 2D$2.4 million, according to Chris Minnick, the city chief financial officer. Minnick confirmed the figure to the committee. Aldermen asked whether Phillips Park can absorb play from the announced Orchard Valley closure; Schmidt said he expects to pick up some of the estimated 35,000 2D40,000 rounds but noted other courses will also absorb play.
On merchandise, Schmidt requested $25,000 to expand inventory to meet rising wholesale and freight costs and to support custom fitting events that drive sales. He said rising product costs limit the variety the pro shop can offer and increased inventory helps support retail and promotional events. Schmidt told the committee that adding patio furniture and improved course signage would enhance the facility and potentially increase on-site spending.
Committee members praised increased league participation and marketing efforts. Schmidt credited his assistant, Eric Anderson, for much of the registration growth and highlighted efforts such as email marketing, simulator events and expanded beverage-cart hours to increase revenue and player engagement.
