Sac City teacher highlights Poderosas mural project during Hispanic Heritage observance

Vanessa Saenz Kattebek, a teacher at Phoebe Hearst Elementary and second vice president of the Sacramento City Teachers Association, spoke on behalf of Sacramento City Unified and SCTA to mark Hispanic Heritage Month.
"On behalf of Sac City Unified and SCTA, I'd like to wish you a happy Hispanic Heritage Month," Saenz Kattebek said, then described the Poderozas (Poderosas) mural project celebrating Chicana and Latina women who have worked on social justice and advocacy in the Sacramento Valley.
Saenz Kattebek said the mural honors figures including Juanita Polendo Ontiveros, whom she described as an alumna of Sacramento City College and Sacramento State, chair of the United Farm Workers Support Committee for Northern California and a longtime member of the Royal Chicano Air Force. She also noted Ontiveros's leadership roles with the Dolores Huerta Support Network and work with California Rural Legal Assistance and the CRLA Foundation.
The speaker credited attorney Diana Lyons with starting the UFW legal department appellate division and the Martin Luther King Farm Workers Service Center in Sacramento, and urged interested people to visit sacpoderosas.org to learn where the murals are displayed and about the mural subjects.
