Vanessa Saenz Kattebek, a teacher at Phoebe Hearst Elementary School and second vice president of the Sacramento City Teachers Association, told the Sacramento City Unified Board during public comment that the district and the union are celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month. "On behalf of Sac City Unified and SCTA, I'd like to wish you a happy Hispanic Heritage Month," Kattebek said.
Kattebek said the "Poderosas" mural project recognizes nine Chicana‑Latina leaders who have engaged in social justice and advocacy in the Sacramento Valley. She described one subject of the mural as a longtime union organizer and an academic affiliated with Sacramento State, and she summarized that subject's academic background and areas of work as presented in her remarks.
Kattebek said the mural project highlights work in participatory action research, critical pedagogy, anti‑racism and social justice education and encouraged people to learn more online. "To learn more about the Poderosas mural project, visit the website sacpoderozas.org where you can find out more about the mural subjects and also where it can be viewed currently," she said.
Her remarks were delivered entirely during the public comment period; there were no board actions tied to the presentation. The comment linked a community arts project to classroom and union activities, and provided a web address for residents seeking viewing locations and additional background.
