Sunset Ridge PK-8 honored as one of Colorado’s top elementary schools

The Westminster Public Schools board on Oct. 14 recognized Sunset Ridge PK-8 after Money Inc. named the school No. 24 on its list of Colorado’s top 30 elementary schools.

Steve Saunders introduced the recognition and noted the district’s message that schools are about more than buildings or test scores. Superintendent Dr. Gatto and former principal Roger Vadine joined current principal Lupita Arce and longtime teacher Molly Brown at the board meeting for remarks and celebration.

Lupita Arce, principal of Sunset Ridge PK-8, told the board the school’s “strength begins with the relationships we build with our students, our families, and one another,” and credited long staff tenure and strong community ties for the school’s culture.

Teacher Molly Brown, who said she has worked in Westminster Public Schools for 27 years and at Sunset Ridge for much of that time, praised the school’s professional culture and routines, including peer observations, structured literacy across K–6, and mentorship. Brown said many Sunset Ridge staff have been at the school for 10, 20 or 25 years and that generations of families return to the school.

Former principal Roger Vadine, who attended the celebration at the school, called Sunset Ridge “a special place” and expressed confidence in Arce’s leadership as he transitions away from the role.

Why it matters: The board’s recognition highlights local school culture, staff longevity, and district curricular work such as structured literacy and competency-based practices. District leaders said outside recognition helps affirm the school’s approach and community partnerships.

The board provided brief remarks and applause; the school staff received a small celebratory treat, which board and district officials noted during the meeting.
