Canton trustees approve site plan for Fire Station No. 4; construction expected to begin in spring 2026

The Canton Township Board of Trustees approved Resolution No. 25‑31 on Oct. 14 to approve the site plan for Canton Township Fire Station No. 4 on planning application 138‑SPX‑8189.
Clerk Clark Siegrist moved the resolution, which was supported on the floor and adopted by voice vote. Township planners and fire officials described the site as a 16.83‑acre township‑owned parcel on the south side of Michigan Avenue, west of Lily Road. Township officials said roughly 25% of emergency calls originate in the southeastern quadrant of Canton; a station in that area is intended to reduce response times.
Chief Stockline told the board the project required significant redesign work after wetlands were discovered at the original site selection. The building was shifted to the west and the disturbed area reduced to under 1 acre; that rework led to additional design, geotechnical and surveying expenses. Chief Stockline said a draft permit had been received and was expected to be finalized in the coming days, which would allow the project to move into contractor procurement. "We're happily expecting [the draft permit] to be on our desk within the next five days, and then we can get that approved and we can start moving forward," he said. Board members were told construction site work could begin around March 2026, with an anticipated construction timeline of about 11 months from the start of earthwork.
Planning staff said the planning commission recommended approval at its Sept. 8 meeting and that remaining modifications could largely be handled administratively. Director Norwood and community planner Patrick Sloan were present to answer technical questions; Sloan said the site plan was "in really great shape" and that most future changes would be administrative.
The board approved the site plan by voice vote. Township staff said a request for contractor award is expected after permits are finalized and that construction would proceed once procurement is complete.
