A Trinidad councilmember who serves on the Local Agency Formation Commission (LAFCO) reported to the council that LAFCO on Sept. 17 approved a reconsideration that will exclude Humboldt Redwood Company parcels from annexation into the Neland Fire Protection District.
The councilmember said the action represented a pullback from a prior decision to expand the fire district to include commercial timberlands owned by Humboldt Redwood Company. The councilmember explained LAFCO’s decision reflected the company’s position that, under California law, those lands should not be included and that the commission decided to pursue the issue at the state level rather than litigate locally.
The report was delivered during the council reports portion of the Oct. 14 meeting. No formal council action was taken on the report; the councilmember said LAFCO will continue to consider the issue in coordination with state authorities and stakeholders.
