Urbana Housing Authority staff reported that phase 1 of the Stair Place renovation is complete and residents who moved into the renovated apartments appear satisfied.
Staff said phase 2 will close the community room and other common areas while construction proceeds, and the authority has temporarily relocated the property manager's office and community activities into two units to maintain services for residents.
Board members asked about bedbug treatment during the moves. Staff said the authority uses a licensed pest-control service on a recurring basis and educates residents about prevention measures including avoiding used furniture from dumpsters. Staff encouraged residents to notify management immediately so the authority can treat units promptly.
Staff also reported ongoing collaboration with the University of Illinois on a bedbug study. The agency said outreach and resident education is part of that effort and that the study helps staff track and refine treatment and prevention approaches for the city's higher bedbug incidence.
