This fall, Kyrene Elementary District (4267) will ask voters to approve a maintenance-and-operations continuation that the district says would authorize $14,660,000 to support day-to-day operations beyond what the state allocates to schools. A district spokesperson said the measure is a continuation and would not create a new tax or increase existing tax rates.
The district told voters the continuation would fund the equivalent of 200 teaching positions and help maintain smaller class sizes, provide electives, support student services and keep educator salaries competitive. The spokesperson said voters in the past have supported override funding since 1983 and that more than 70,000 students have accessed programs funded by past overrides.
Kyrene also said it directs approximately 75% of its operating budget to classrooms and that the district ranks 10th in Arizona for classroom spending. The district framed the measure as sustaining existing programs and staff levels rather than adding new programs.
The election will be conducted by mail. The district said all registered voters who live within Kyrene Elementary District boundaries are eligible to vote. Voters will receive ballots beginning Oct. 8; ballots must be mailed by Oct. 28 or dropped at a polling location on or before Nov. 4.
