Commissioner Gray said 4‑H and Nassau County Animal Services trained six dogs in obedience to increase adoptability and that those animals would be available for adoption at 5:30 p.m. that evening at the Northeast Florida Fairgrounds. Commissioner McCullough and other commissioners echoed the appeal, noting the shelter was over capacity and asking the public to consider adoption, volunteering or other support.
Officials emphasized the quality‑of‑life argument for removing dogs from small kennels into homes and encouraged residents with fenced yards and time to consider adoption. County staff identified Interim Director Amy Bell as coordinating this program with 4‑H; specific intake numbers, shelter capacity limits and any contingency actions the county might take if capacity remains exceeded were discussed in general terms but no formal board action was taken at the meeting.
Commissioners also promoted related community events at the fair and urged public support for youth agricultural exhibits.
