The Chesterfield County School District board approved several personnel items and discussed a proposal to increase substitute pay during its Oct. 14 meeting.
Human resources presented personnel exhibits A through F for approval; a motion and second carried with all members voting to approve the exhibits. The administration then proposed posting a new maintenance supervisor position to supervise daily maintenance operations; finance staff said non-labor funds would be reallocated to cover the cost so the position would be budget neutral. The board moved, seconded and approved posting the vacancy for maintenance supervisor.
Staff also presented two proposals to raise substitute teacher and substitute classified pay. Administration recommended proposal 1 for substitute teachers, which aligns the district with surrounding districts. Board members debated separating the pay scale for substitute teachers with an associate'degree versus a high-school diploma and discussed market comparators for classified substitutes (custodian, instructional assistant, food-service operator). One board member proposed increasing substitute classified pay to $15 per hour (from the district'mentioned current rate of $7.70), but after further discussion and concern about wider salary-scale implications the member withdrew the motion and the board left the current substitute rates in place pending a broader compensation review.
The board also approved posting a grant-funded part-time adult-education parent educator position tied to a family literacy grant; the presenter said the cost would be fully covered by the grant.
No specific dollar amounts for a maintenance supervisor salary or the final substitute-scale schedule were adopted at the meeting beyond the administration'provided proposals; the board asked staff to revisit classified pay and other scales during the next budget cycle.
