Commission approves Butch Cassidy race permit with shuttle and speed conditions

The Rockville Planning Commission unanimously approved a temporary use special event permit on Oct. 14 for the annual Butch Cassidy race, set for Saturday, Nov. 8, 2025. Robin Sanders, representing the race committee, outlined logistics including start times, a finish line in Grafton, live music and shuttle arrangements.
Sanders told the commission the permit application anticipates about 450 participants and attendees in total — 250 for the 5K and 200 for the 10-mile race — and that the event will use five Valley Academy buses and four smaller shuttle vehicles to move participants and spectators between Springdale and the finish area. Sanders said the committee will notify shuttle drivers in writing and the morning of the event about the speed limit on Bridge Road and in Grafton.
Commissioners confirmed past event history and pressed only on shuttle speed. The approving motion noted that the event “has more than a 40-year history of leaving little impact on the environment and has been both a community fundraiser and a welcome community activity,” and that the committee agrees to notify drivers about the speed limit. The roll-call vote was unanimous.
The permit condition emphasized driver notification to address Rockville’s concern about shuttle speeds along Grafton/Bridge Road. The commission recorded the vote: Andy (aye), Tim (aye), Linda (aye), Ken (aye), Jane Brennan (aye).
