San Miguel County commissioners on Oct. 15 approved a proclamation declaring October 2025 as Bullying Prevention Month and heard a presentation from Peer Kindness, a nonprofit that delivers anti-bullying education in local schools.
Amanda (Peer Kindness) told the board the organization served roughly 6,000 youth in the 2024–2025 school year across five counties including San Miguel, Ouray, Montrose, Delta and Gunnison, with in‑classroom lessons and peer-intervention training. She said Peer Kindness reported increased classroom participation recently in the SHED program and preschool outreach at the local library.
Commissioners read the proclamation into the record and voted unanimously to authorize the chair’s signature. The board encouraged community awareness activities and peer-led interventions that research shows can reduce bullying when peers intervene.
The proclamation enumerated known harms from bullying and called on citizens to pledge support for prevention activities and respectful treatment of children and adolescents.
